Power Outage? Don’t Get Stuck! How to Manually Open Your Garage Door 💡

Power outages can be inconvenient, especially when your garage door won’t open and you need to get your car out (or in!). At The Garage Door Guys, we want to make sure our neighbors in Kingwood, Humble, Porter, Spring, and surrounding areas are always prepared. Here’s a quick guide on how to manually open your garage door during a power outage:

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Close the Garage Door (if open): If your garage door is partially open, it’s safer to close it fully before attempting to disengage the opener. This prevents it from crashing down unexpectedly.
  2. Locate the Emergency Release Cord: Look for a red handle hanging from a rope near the motor unit of your garage door opener. This cord is attached to the trolley, which connects the opener to the door.
  3. Pull the Cord: Firmly pull the red emergency release cord downwards and slightly towards the back of the garage. You should hear a click, indicating that the trolley has disengaged from the opener mechanism.
  4. Manually Lift the Door: Once disengaged, you can now carefully lift the garage door by hand. Be cautious, as the door will be heavy. Lift it until it’s fully open and secure it in place if possible (some doors have a manual lock for this).
  5. To Re-engage: Once power is restored, or you’re ready to use the opener again, simply pull the red cord towards the garage door (away from the opener) until it clicks back into place. Then, operate your garage door with the remote or wall button to ensure it re-engages properly.

Important Safety Note: Never disengage the emergency release cord while the garage door is open, as it could fall rapidly and cause injury or damage. Always ensure the door is fully closed or held securely before pulling the cord.

Being prepared can save you a lot of hassle during unexpected power outages. If you have any questions or need assistance with your garage door, we’re here to help!
