⚠️ TorqueMaster vs. Traditional Torsion Springs: What’s the Difference?

Some Wayne Dalton garage doors use a TorqueMaster® system, where the springs are hidden inside a steel tube above the door. A traditional torsion system uses one or two visible springs mounted around a steel shaft.

The enclosed TorqueMaster design looks clean and helps contain the spring if it breaks, which is a legitimate safety benefit. However, for long-term ownership and repairability, we generally prefer converting these doors to a traditional torsion spring system.

Why can TorqueMaster systems become frustrating?

Because the springs are hidden inside the tube, a broken or weakened spring may not be immediately visible. The system also uses more proprietary Wayne Dalton components, which can limit replacement options and make repairs more specialized than a conventional setup.

Many standard TorqueMaster replacement springs are rated around 10,000 cycles, although Wayne Dalton offers optional higher-cycle configurations on certain doors. Spring life depends heavily on the exact spring, door weight, installation and daily usage.

Why do we usually recommend traditional torsion springs?

✅ Easier to inspect and diagnose
✅ More widely available replacement parts
✅ More spring-size and cycle-life options
✅ Easier for most garage-door professionals to service
✅ Often a better long-term solution than repeatedly repairing proprietary components

Traditional torsion springs have been the standard counterbalance system for sectional garage doors for decades and remain widely used because they are effective, durable and serviceable.

A TorqueMaster system isn’t automatically unsafe or defective—but when it begins failing, converting it to a properly sized traditional torsion system can provide easier maintenance, greater parts availability and better long-term serviceability.

⚠️ Garage-door springs operate under extreme tension. Never attempt to adjust, remove or replace them yourself. These repairs should always be handled by a trained technician.
