That red cord hanging from your garage door opener isn’t just there for emergencies you hope never happen.
It’s called the emergency release cord, and it disconnects your garage door from the opener so the door can be moved manually.
You may need to use it when:
✅ The power goes out and you need to open the garage manually
✅ Your opener stops working but the door itself is still in good condition
✅ You need to disengage the opener for inspection or service
But there’s one very important warning:
⚠️ Do not pull the emergency release cord if the garage door is open or if you suspect a broken spring.
If the spring system isn’t supporting the weight of the door, disconnecting the opener can allow the door to fall unexpectedly.
When in doubt, keep the door closed and call a professional.
