TorqueMaster vs. Standard Torsion Springs — What’s the Difference?

Not all garage door spring systems are created equal.

One system we regularly run into is the Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster system. Instead of having the springs mounted visibly above the door, TorqueMaster uses smaller springs enclosed inside a metal tube.

It looks clean, but there are some drawbacks.

TorqueMaster systems can be:

⚠️ Harder to inspect because the springs are hidden
⚠️ More difficult to diagnose when something starts failing
⚠️ More limited when it comes to replacement parts and repair options
⚠️ More expensive or inconvenient to service as the system ages

A standard torsion spring system uses exposed springs mounted on a torsion shaft above the garage door.

That setup makes it easier to:

✅ Inspect the springs and hardware
✅ Identify wear or damage
✅ Replace individual components when needed
✅ Properly balance the door
✅ Upgrade to higher-cycle springs
✅ Find readily available replacement parts

For many homeowners, converting an aging TorqueMaster system to a standard torsion spring setup can make future repairs simpler and give you a stronger, more serviceable system.

That doesn’t mean every TorqueMaster system needs to be replaced immediately. If yours is still operating properly, there may be no reason to change it today.

But when it finally fails, it’s worth asking whether repairing the original system or converting to standard torsion springs makes more sense long-term.
