If your garage door starts to close and then reverses right back open, the opener is usually detecting something it doesn’t like.
A few of the most common causes are:
✅ Blocked or misaligned safety sensors
If the photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the tracks can’t see each other clearly, the opener may reverse the door as a safety precaution.
✅ Dirty sensor lenses
Dust, dirt, spider webs, or debris can be enough to interrupt the beam.
✅ Something is in the doorway
Even a small object in the path of the door or sensors can trigger a reversal.
✅ The door is binding or moving unevenly
If the door is dragging, crooked, or meeting too much resistance, the opener may stop and reverse.
✅ The opener’s travel or force settings may be off
If the opener thinks the door has hit an obstruction before it actually reaches the floor, it may send it back up.
Before calling for service, check the simple things first:
Make sure the doorway is clear, wipe off the sensor lenses, and confirm both sensors are pointed directly at each other.
Sometimes that’s all it takes.
