🚪 What Causes Garage Door Panels to Crack or Separate?

Your garage door panels aren’t supposed to flex, bow, or separate every time the door moves.

When they start doing it, something is usually putting stress on the door that shouldn’t be there.

Some of the most common causes include:

✅ A door that isn’t properly balanced — Weak or incorrect springs can force the door and opener to work against excessive weight.

✅ Worn or damaged hinges and rollers — If the sections can’t move smoothly through the radius of the track, that additional resistance can put stress on the panels.

✅ A damaged or improperly adjusted opener — An opener that pushes or pulls too aggressively can place unnecessary force on the top section and other parts of the door.

✅ Missing or inadequate reinforcement — Larger doors need proper struts and reinforcement to help prevent sections from bowing and flexing.

✅ Impact damage — Even a relatively small hit from a vehicle, lawn equipment, or another object can weaken a section and eventually cause the damage to spread.

The important part is that panel damage usually doesn’t get better on its own.

A slight bow, small crack, or separating section may be repairable when it’s caught early. Continue operating the door while it’s binding and flexing, however, and that smaller problem can eventually turn into a door that needs to be replaced.

We’ve seen doors reach the point where the sections are so distorted that they have to be physically pushed back into position just to get the door closed.

Catching the problem early can be the difference between replacing a strut or repairing some hardware and replacing the entire door.
