Imagine sitting in your living room when suddenly you hear what sounds like a gunshot coming from your garage.

You rush out to investigate, but nothing appears to have fallen, nothing looks broken, and everything seems perfectly normal.
Well, there’s a good chance one of your garage door springs just broke.
Garage door torsion springs are responsible for counterbalancing most of your door’s weight, allowing it to open and close smoothly without putting excessive strain on the opener.
These springs are under tremendous tension, and after thousands of cycles, the metal can eventually fatigue and break.
When that happens, the sudden release of stored energy can produce an extremely loud BANG!
🔧 SO HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A SPRING BROKE?
Here are some common warning signs:
✅ A visible gap in the spring — Look above your garage door. If you see a separation in one of the torsion springs, it’s broken.
✅ Your garage door won’t open — The opener may only lift the door a few inches before stopping because it can no longer overcome the door’s weight.
✅ The door suddenly feels extremely heavy — Without the spring properly counterbalancing the door, you’re dealing with significantly more weight.
✅ Your opener sounds like it’s struggling — You may hear the motor working harder than usual or notice the door barely moving.
✅ Loose cables or uneven movement — A spring failure can sometimes leave cables slack or cause the door to move improperly.
⚠️ HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T DO!
If you suspect a broken spring, stop operating your garage door immediately.
Repeatedly pressing the opener button can damage the motor, bend the opener rail, or cause additional damage to the door.
And whatever you do, don’t attempt to replace or adjust the spring yourself.
Garage door springs store tremendous amounts of energy and can cause serious injuries when handled improperly.
💡 THE GOOD NEWS?
A broken spring doesn’t automatically mean you need a new garage door or opener.
In many cases, replacing the failed spring or spring pair, inspecting the hardware, and properly balancing the door is all that’s needed to restore normal operation.
At The Garage Door Guys, we believe in fixing what’s actually broken—not selling you an entirely new system when a repair will do the job.
So if you hear a mysterious BANG coming from your garage, don’t panic.
It might not be something falling over. It might just be your garage door telling you it’s time for a new spring.
