Imagine sitting in your living room when suddenly you hear what sounds like a gunshot coming from your garage.
You go outside to investigate, but nothing has fallen, nothing appears damaged, and everything seems perfectly normal.
Well, there’s a good chance your garage door just broke a spring.
And while that loud bang might have startled you, the real problem usually becomes apparent the next time you try opening your garage door.
🔧 SO WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?
Garage door torsion springs are responsible for counterbalancing most of your garage door’s weight.
These springs are under tremendous tension, and every time your garage door opens and closes, they’re put through another cycle of use.
Over thousands of cycles, the metal gradually fatigues until eventually the spring can break.
When that happens, the sudden release of stored energy can produce an extremely loud BANG!
🚨 HERE ARE 5 SIGNS YOUR GARAGE DOOR SPRING MAY HAVE BROKEN:
1️⃣ A Visible Gap in the Spring
Look above your garage door. If you see a noticeable separation in the coils of a torsion spring, that’s a clear indication it has broken.
2️⃣ Your Garage Door Won’t Open
Your opener may attempt to lift the door but only manage a few inches before stopping.
Without the spring helping counterbalance the weight, the opener simply isn’t designed to do all that lifting by itself.
3️⃣ Your Garage Door Suddenly Feels Extremely Heavy
A properly balanced garage door should be relatively easy to move manually.
When a spring breaks, that counterbalance is lost, leaving you dealing with much more of the door’s actual weight.
4️⃣ Your Opener Sounds Like It’s Struggling
If your opener suddenly sounds strained, hums without lifting the door, or stops shortly after attempting to open, a broken spring could be the reason.
5️⃣ Loose Cables or Uneven Movement
Depending on the spring system and how the failure occurred, you might notice loose cables or a door that appears crooked.
These are signs that the door may be unsafe to operate.
⚠️ HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER DO!
If you suspect a broken spring, stop operating the garage door immediately.
Repeatedly pressing the opener button can damage the opener, bend its rail, or cause additional damage to the garage door itself.
And don’t attempt to replace or adjust the spring yourself. These systems store significant amounts of energy and can cause serious injury if handled improperly.
💡 THE GOOD NEWS?
A broken spring doesn’t automatically mean you need a new garage door or opener.
In most cases, replacing the failed spring, inspecting the surrounding hardware, and properly balancing the system can get everything operating smoothly again.
If your door has two springs of similar age and wear, replacing both at the same time may also make sense to help avoid another service call in the near future.
At The Garage Door Guys, our goal is to repair what’s actually broken, not sell you equipment you don’t need.
So the next time you hear what sounds like a gunshot coming from your garage, don’t immediately assume something fell over.
Your garage door might have just announced its retirement from spring duty.
